NO RADIO [KG010]
Here’s a prototype mix for a new series that will become the official Up In The Ear podcast.
Radio to me has been wonderful, it’s always a great experience but knowing the way in which I consume music I wrestle with a justification for remaining on Playback FM. Pirate radio isn’t easy, you’re often going to some pretty undesirable places and roughing it out but I can’t help but wonder yet again how I’m peeling forty coins to go someplace that’s smaller than my home studio, risking being accosted by the authorities and having my equipment confiscated, just to transmit to ghost listeners and a few textures and upload the session to Soundcloud.
I used to see radio as a validation of me being a DJ but it’s got to a point where it’s a hindrance because the environment in which I do my show doesn’t afford me the luxury to have guests, do interviews and have discussions. I may have a pretty dope introduction but my mixes are pretty much sounding like any other DJ, I strive to be more engaging and a reflection of the blog. I figure that people, myself included, are distracted on a day to day so they tend to consume things as and when they feel to, think BBC iPlayer etc. The question pops into my head all the time
Why are you there, why are you paying subs to do what you could at home to a much higher standard?
Today I have had so much fun adding the extras and I feel strongly that this is the direction I want to take. DJing ain’t just about spinning a few songs and doing shouts and requests, in this day and age I feel like there’s so many opportunities to be innovative and recording a session and uploading it to soundcloud isn’t enough. Up In The Ear weren’t setup to be one dimensional, there are many different shades and hues on this spectrum, all of which need room to breathe.
I’ve had some ideas and a vision with what I wanted to do for years so the way how I see life nowadays, I can’t afford to waste time and resources anywhere other than materialising my ideas. However much I say that this is a prototype and seem indecisive about my decision whether I’ll leave Playback or stay, I think I made my decision a very long time ago…
